dc rats (parts 1 & 2)

in the spirit of marcel duchamp's "ready-made" art, this piece is named after two personal experiences of mine: the infamous d.c. rush hour ("rat race") and the large rodents which stalk the streets of mt. pleasant.

onebird
twobird
threebird

these three are self explanatory: layers of birdsong. the thing that makes them interesting is the juxtaposition of the repeating rhythms made by the birds, and the fact that all the samples were gathered from public domain sound files found on the Internet.

the rhythmic structure of the pieces is based on the measurements of the five "pythagorean" (or "perfect") solids: tetrahedron, hexahedron, octahedron, icosahedron, and dodecahedron.

cows (lambda mix i & ii)

the first of these remixes was created by suggestion of tal klein to remix his minimal piece "why am i what i am?" for a project on mp3.com, and both versions are available online at http://www.mp3.com/imnotbatman.

the second takes as its source a piece appearing on the zitt/matis cd "Even the Widest Aardvark Outdreams the Gnu" called "Zomba", and uses the same procedures for as the first.

each original was split into sections using chance operations. a new piece was formulated using the i ching oracle to create a sequence of either silence or sound split between two channels (left and right). a background layer was added, and further chance operations were used to create effects.

the procedures were formulated out of a desire to remix a song with a constant beat into something which contained that beat but constantly changed. the fundamental beat remained, but each time it appears in the remix, it is modified because of that with which it is combined.

the title comes from where i met tal: the online lambdamoo community.

bats (dtvddr auio)

this work takes as its source material a group of ten "vignettes" called DTAUVDIODR, which is part of the Sonic Memorial for David Tudor. the subtitle is derived from that name, but the supertitle is reminiscent both of the sonic punctuations of flying rodents and the bells in cathedrals where they live.

for more information on DTAUVDIODR itself, see http://www.artswire.org/mrd/tudor

fish (blackwater mix)

this is a remix commissioned by tal klein for an upcoming collection of remixed songs by his group, trancenden. it takes as its source the piece "Dew'n Time", samples from which were guided by measuring the distance of tossed pebbles (all taken from the bed of blackwater creek near deland, florida) from chance-determined lines on graph paper. trancenden has several songs and cd's available at http://www.mp3.com/trancenden.
