Corduroy Piano Dream

Comma

Last night I had a wonderful dream in which I was shopping for a new piano. I went into a large piano store, considered baby grands, then asked to see some studio uprights. The model that really intrigued me had a keyboard in which the keys were of varying width, none much smaller than usual, but some about twice as wide as usual. Also each key was covered in pinwale gray corduroy with beautiful flecks of red in the fabric. The keys felt great to my fingers. The widths varied in order to introduce an element of irregularity to the phrasing of almost anything anyone would try to play on the instrument. In the dream I understood that irregular aspect to be a way of making any music more beautiful.

We may need to sell these keyboards in the Comma gift shops. Pax, -Tom

Comma improvised this piece in the studio. Inspired by the dream, we decided that it would begin with those words and its approximate duration, and let the rest happen. Decorative Bar
