Halleluyah Ketjak

Joseph Zitt

"My heart is in the East
and I am in the farthest West"
-- Judah Halevi

The voices chant rhythmically the syllables of the word "Halleluyah" then the complete word.

"Ketjak" (or "kecak", or several other spellings) is a vigorously rhythmic Balinese Monkey Chant, the sound of which inspired this piece.

The piece began as an electronic work, with a sequencer playing samples of voices saying the syllables, in the score of the composer's dance-theatre production Shekhinah: the Presence. It was adapted for live voices and performed by the ensemble Question Authority, The in Dallas, and Empty Words in Austin, TX. Further changes were made to the score, reaching its current form, in developing it for Comma.
