Bringing Forth the Voice
Joseph Zitt
"Twenty-two foundation letters: They are engraved with voice,
carved with breath, and placed in the mouth in five
places..." (Sefer Yetzirah 2:3)
The voices move through five sets of consonants
(as grouped in the verse in the Sefer Yetzirah)
and their associated vowels (as indicated in
Rabbi Aryeh Kaplan's commentary):
- In the throat:
- Aleph, Khet, He, Ayin (vowel: a)
- In the palate:
- Gimel, Yod, Kaph, Quf (vowel: e)
- In the tongue:
- Daled, Tet, Lamed, Nun, Tav (vowel: o)
- In the teeth:
- Zayin, Samekh, Shin, Resh, Tzaddi (vowel: i)
- In the lips:
- Bet, Vav, Mem, Peh (vowel: u)
Over the course of the piece, the voices
move gradually from spoken and whispered sounds
to full "singing", and shift into the next piece
at the end.
