Approaches and Departures
-- from the score Pauline Oliveros composed Approaches and Departures (Appearances and Disappearances for solo, duo or ensemble) in 1994. The piece is a study in spontaneous creativity and deep listening. Each player selects a single pitch and approaches it and departs from it in as many ways as possible.
For this recording, and in performance, Comma used
tuning forks to consistently supply the home pitches of
A, G, and E. (The odd percussive event midway through
the piece is the sound of the A fork escaping and
bouncing across the floor. We decided to keep the take
and leave the sound in there to maintain the original
continuity.)
